STEP 1 OF 4

Centering

Measure the border-width difference between left/right (and top/bottom) with calipers or a centering app. Match to the tenth of a millimeter — graders round.

Difference is 0 to 0.5 mm Roughly 50/50 to 55/45. BGS-eligible territory. Difference is 0.5 to 1.0 mm Roughly 55/45 to 60/40. PSA-tolerable, BGS will dock you. Difference is greater than 1.0 mm 60/40 or worse on the front.

Edges

Inspect under angled light with magnification. Count whitening, fraying, dings.

Clean — no edge issues 1 minor flawFaint whitening on a single edge, barely visible. 2 minor flawsVisible under magnification, not obvious to the naked eye. 3+ flaws OR any major flawObvious damage, multiple whitening points, or a ding.

STEP 3 OF 4

Corners

Same workflow as edges — angled light + magnification. Check all four.

WHITENING

All four sharp 1 soft cornerSlight rounding, no whitening. 2 soft corners 3+ soft corners OR a bent pointBent corner is a major defect on its own.

STEP 4 OF 4

Surface

Front AND back. Vary the lighting angle. Scratches, print defects, and holo scuffs all count. BGS reads both sides; PSA gives some forgiveness on the back.

SCRATCH

Clean front and back 1 minor flawHairline scratch or tiny print speck visible under loupe. 2 minor flaws 3+ flaws OR visible-to-naked-eye scratchAnything you can see without magnification is a major.
